Editorial Note On 20-27 August 2013 the XVth International Congress of Slavists will be held in Minsk, Belarus. Until 2008 the Belgian contributions have been published in Slavica Gandensia, the international review for Slavistics published by the Department of Slavic and East European Studies at Ghent University under the auspices of the ‘Belgian Association of Slavists’. Unfortunately, in 2009 Slavica Gandensia has ceased publication. For that reason the Belgian contributions have been collected in this 21 issue of POES (Pegasus East European Studies). The nine papers by Belgian participants included in the present volume cover the wide spectrum of Russian and Bulgarian literature, linguistics, sociolinguistics, translation studies, palaeoslavistics and folkloristics. KARINE ALAVERDIAN (Université libre de Bruxelles) analyzes the function of the detail in the characterization of Konstantin Levin’s brother Nikolaj in Lev Tolstoj’s Anna Karenina. GIULIA GIGANTE (Université libre de Bruxelles) deals with the poetics of Ljudmila Ulickaja’s prose writings and her role in contemporary Russian literature. The contribution by MICHEL DE DOBBELEER (Universiteit Gent) provides a survey of what can or could be regarded as Russian epic. RAYMOND DETREZ (Universiteit Gent) discusses the poetics of the autobiography of the Bulgarian writer Grigor Prličev. OLGA NOVITSKAJA (KU Leuven, Campus Antwerpen) and ERIC METZ (Universiteit van Amsterdam) discuss problems of translating phraseological units from Russian into Dutch and vice versa. TATJANA SOLDATENKOVA (KU Leuven) compares views on normativity in the Russian language from the Middle Ages until now with those in West European languages. The contribution by DIETER STERN (Universiteit Gent) focuses on religious hymns and songs that are used in the XVI-XVIII century in the Orthodox Church in Central Europe and Russia and on their relationship with Slavic-Byzantine hymnography. ALEKSEY YUDIN elucidates a methodology for the description of proper names in East Slavic magic folklore. Last, NADEZHDA ZHIROVOVA (Université libre de Bruxelles and Universiteit Antwerpen) discusses the concepts of vlast’ and pravo in the discourse of Russian speaking immigrants in Belgium. In addition this volume contains four extra articles: by MACHA MAÇARSKAIA (Institut Libre Marie Haps) on the problems of translating the dialect of Odessa in the works of Isaak Babel’ into French; by DOROTA WALCZAK-DELANOIS (Université libre de Bruxelles) on the Polish poet Miron Białoszewski; by STIJN VERVAET (Universiteit Gent) on the representation of the holocaust in two novels by David Albahari; and by MARTINE VAN GOUBERGEN (KU Leuven HUBrussel) on the Lev Šestov and his views on and dialogue with antique philosophy.
