Ailsa Wright was engaged in 1914 as English governess to the son of Dmitry Davydov, past Gentleman in Waiting to the Tsar, and 'the doyen of Kiev aristocracy'. Some thirty letters to her family at home survive, providing fascinating insights into the domestic and social life of this wealthy and culturally rich Russian environment during the outbreak of the First World War and the advent of the Revolution. They include reports of social activities, famous concerts, royal visits, and war activities. It is a personal and sometimes moving record of an encounter between two worlds which would never be the same again.
