The book is a critical edition of Slave 123, a 16th Russian century manuscript in the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris. This manuscript contains 113 chapters mostly (85%) written by Maksim Grek (Michail Trivolis). Maksim (ca.1470 – 1556), a Greek monk, studied in Florence, afterwards lived on Athos and came in 1518 to Moscow in order to translate religious Greek books that were in the possession of grandduke Vasilij III.Besides his translations, he wrote a lot of letters to friends and foes on astrology, Roman Catholicism and matters of Russian domestic policies that brought him in controversy with the secular and ecclesiastical powers in Russia. Twice he was condemned of heretical views to prison (1525 and 1531). The authorities found the base for this accusations in his translations. A second ground for condemnation lied in Maksim’s opposition to the efforts of the Russian Orthodox church to free itself from the patriarch of Constantinople. Maksim Grek belonged entirely to the Byzantine theological tradition. An analysis of the Slovo na Latinov (letter to the catholics) and the Poslanie Vasiliju Ivanoviču (letter to Vasilij III), both in Slave 123, shows that he must be considered as belonging to its mystical stream.
